Synopsis
“UnWoman,” directed by Pallavi Roy and released on May 5, 2023, is a poignant Hindi-language drama that delves into the complexities of love, identity, and societal norms in rural Rajasthan. The narrative centers on Bhanwar (Sarthak Narula), a simple villager under the influence of his domineering uncle, Bhairo (Bhagwan Tiwari). In an attempt to improve their living conditions, Bhairo persuades Bhanwar to purchase a bride. However, they are deceived by a trafficker who sells them Sanwri (Kanak Garg), an intersex/transgender individual. As Bhanwar and Sanwri’s relationship evolves from necessity to genuine affection, they confront societal prejudices and familial opposition.
The film has been lauded for its sensitive portrayal of LGBTQ+ themes within the conservative backdrop of rural India. The Times of India praised the movie for its “gentle storytelling and important message,” highlighting the nuanced performances of the cast. Sarthak Narula effectively captures Bhanwar’s internal struggle between societal conditioning and personal desires, while Bhagwan Tiwari’s portrayal of Bhairo evokes the intended aversion. Kanak Garg delivers a compelling performance as Sanwri, embodying resilience and vulnerability.
