Synopsis
Bawaal (2023) isn’t your everyday Bollywood film. It’s a cinematic experiment that dares to blend romance, history, and self-discovery in one unpredictable ride. Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, the mastermind behind Dangal and Chhichhore, the film features Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor in roles that are equal parts tender and transformative.
Whether you’re a fan of historical undertones or modern-day emotional drama, Bawaal has something waiting for you—if you’re willing to dive deep.
Plot Summary – What Is Bawaal Really About?
On the surface, Bawaal follows Ajay Dixit, aka Ajju Bhaiya (played by Varun Dhawan), a small-town history teacher from Lucknow obsessed with maintaining a “perfect image.” But scratch that surface, and you find layers of insecurity, false pride, and a reluctance to confront his failures.
Things take a turn when Ajay marries Nisha (Janhvi Kapoor), a smart, self-assured woman with epilepsy—a fact Ajay tries to hide from society to protect his fragile reputation. Their rocky marriage becomes the heart of the film’s emotional arc.
The Twist? Europe and World War II.
When Ajay is suspended for slapping a student, he decides to salvage his image by traveling across Europe and “teaching” World War II from actual historic sites. Nisha joins him, reluctantly at first. But as the couple visits war-ravaged cities like Paris, Amsterdam, and Auschwitz, the gravity of history forces them to confront their own emotional baggage.
This unusual juxtaposition—romantic drama set against the backdrop of World War II—makes Bawaal feel unique, if not entirely conventional.
